The Evolution of ChatBots

Chatbots are usually considered to be an emerging technology that doesn’t date back that long. Surprisingly, they’ve been around since the time of computers.

The very first chatbot was created at the MIT in 1966 by the name of Elizza which was later called the chatter bot. The main purpose of this chatbot was to create a communication interface between the machine and the Man. Elizza gained immense popularity when it impersonated the responses of a non-directional psychotherapist in an initial psychiatric interview.

In 1972, After Elizza , another very famous chatbot was created at Stanford university by the name “Parry” . Parry was a modified version of Elizza but with an attitude. Most interestingly, both of these initial chatbots were hooked through ARPANET & communicated with each other. Furthermore, during a turing test, professional psychiatrists were only able to differentiate 48% of responses from a real human and Parry.

After success of the initial two text chatbots, Jabberwacky was released as the first chatbot to simulate human voice. The aim of its creation was to enable the chatbot to pass the turing test. Following the footsteps of Jabberwacky, Dr Sbaitso was created in 1992. The Chatbot had a User Interface were Dr Sbaitso imitated the responses of a psychologist.

Created in 1995, ALICE was the most famous chatbot of 20th century. Being inspired by Elizz, it was able to chat with humans more efficiently owing to its heuristic functions . ALICE was also the inspiration for Apple’s personal assistant chatbot “Siri”. Apart from groundbreaking developments in computer science, ALICE was also the inspiration of many science fiction movies.

After going through all the facts & figures, we can say that Chatbots are not an alien idea, they existed decades ago. The use of chatbots was not as much as excessive earlier as it is today. Centered on assisting humans in performing their tasks efficiently, the chatbots we know of today have evolved immensely over the years.

The revolution in Chatbots came with the launch of Apple’s personal assistant Siri. Siri features a vivid range of user commands, including performing phone actions, scheduling events, checking basic information, reminders, handling device settings, navigating areas, searching the Internet, finding information on entertainment, and is also able to engage with iOS-integrated applications.

After the revolution brought by IBM’s Watson in terms of natural language processing, others also jumped in to the game. Amazon introduced Alexa & Google developed dialog agent known as Dialog Flow which offers natural language processing capabilities. Google’s agent provides single platform integration with Chatbot frameworks of Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Cortana, Alexa, Slack and many more.

Many of the leading businesses now use chatbots to enhance their efficiency. From retail to entertainment from navigation to information acquirement, chatbots are everywhere.

Diversified applications of Chatbots

Being able to analyze information & take decisions on their own, chatbots will be an integral part of our lives. While the idea of taking decisions may scare many people but it is destined to enable humans to operate effectively and efficiently.

For example, In case of any disaster, these intelligent personal assistants can notify their owners and help them accordingly. No one knows what innovations would we be witnessing in chatbot technology but one thing’s for sure that sky’s the limit. Due to the application of AI, chatbot technology will evolve drastically to provide an ease & convenience in human lives.
